PSP-4000 in the works?

psp-4000_in_the_works

Sony made it pretty clear when they announced the yet to be released PSP Go, that it was an addition to the PSP family and not a replacement of the PSP-3000. They have also reiterated their support for UMD and physical distribution.

So it stands to reason that Sony would be working on a true successor to the UMD wielding PSP-3000.

This little tidbit from alleged Sony insider "Super_secret" (who gave surprisingly accurate details of the PS3 slim before the announcement), gives new hope for those looking for a updated UMD PSP:

"Who said the 3000 wasn't being phased out? It will be and sooner than you realise. However, the PSP Go isn't what's replacing it. The 4000 is. And yes, it will have a UMD drive. And similar to the PS3 slim, it's nothing to actually get excited about."

psp-4000_mock_upIt seems to be a no-brainer that a PSP-3000 upgrade will come, but what could it include? Obvious additions would be features carried over from the PSP Go, like bluetooth, onboard memory (to take advantage of the new push for downloadable PSP games and Minis), and non-user replaceable battery (to help curb the PSP piracy issue as was done with the PSP Go). Far less likely would be the much coveted second analogue nub or a major design revision until the true PSP2.

As for a potential announcement, Tokyo Game Show later this month would seem highly unlikely, as it would undermine the PSP Go launch on October 1st. The next big gaming event after TGS is E3 next June. Will we see anything before then?
