PlayStation Network receiving a rewards program?

playstation_network_receiving_a_rewards_programA recent trademark registered by Sony Computer Entertainment America titled P.S Thanks has sparked rumors that the PlayStation Network may be getting some sort of reward system sometime in the future.

The trademark describes; "Incentive rewards program geared toward qualifying, indentifying and motivating top consumer base with the promotion and sale of video game hardware and software."

This of course raises the question as to how exactly such a feature would be implemented. You may remember back before PlayStation Home was released that the Home service would receive a trophy display area where users could show off their rewards to other players through home, this however was short lived and never truly appeared beyond a beta video which you can find around the web. Adding this feature to home under a trademark does seem unlikely though, mainly because they shouldn't need a trademark to do this since the other rival platforms do not offer a Home like service.

Another perspective on this could be similar to "Club Nintendo" which allows purchasers of official Nintendo titles to trade "Stars" in for real items through the Club Nintendo website. Users can purchase various video game items such as Mario's famous hat and other such game memorabilia.

On the other hand, this all could be just a trademark that will never see anything come of it, so don't expect any big announcement from Sony regarding this. What is questionable however is why has the trademark only been filed by SCEA and not the rest of the territories like SCEE for instance.
