Call of Duty: Black Ops subscription service inbound?

call_of_duty_black_ops_subscription_service_inboundActivision, publisher for the popular award winning Call of Duty games, is finding a new way to make money through its Call of Duty franchise. According to a report, the company is working on a subscription model for the new game.

The report comes from an interview through online magazine MCV. It details an announcement that could come next month regarding a new way to monetise the only elements of its titles. A full multiplayer reveal is planned for the game on September 1 which the announcement may coincide with.

This isn't the first time the word subscription and pay-to-play has been mentioned in the same sentence as a Call of Duty game. The Modern Warfare games have been extremely popular, raking millions in profit for Activision.

However, Community Manager Robert Bowling previously debunked the rumor that future players would have to pay-to-play Call of Duty multiplayer.

So what do we make of it?

Even though Robert Bowling said there would be no subscription service to play Call of Duty games online, plans can change and so can the minds of the people on the board of directors. All the Call of Duty games released to date have been free to play online, but with countless numbers of players playing the Modern Warfare series online across PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the revenue it could generate is certainly something they will have looked at. The question is, will players respond in kindness, or refuse to pay for a service which, in theory, should be free.

Call of Duty: Black Ops releases on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS on November 9.
