X-Men Origins: Wolverine Review - Page 2

The control system is infuriating in a lot of different ways, at various points you're asked to perform the simplest of tasks, jump from one platform to another, the trouble being that it requires far more accuracy from the player than the game engine will allow. This is especially annoying when you're at an action point in the game and you find yourself jumping towards a platform and not making the jump by a midge's knee, having to restart from a checkpoint you've done enough times already you find yourself slowing yourself down and measuring the jumps. This would be fine if the rest of the game demanded a similar amount of accuracy, but it doesn't...

thumb_x-men_origins_wolverine_20090824_1297516427Also annoying are some little bugs that haven't been addressed, more than once I found myself restarting a check point because I thought something had gone wrong in the game. I was right – The first time I was supposed to slide down a power line, only I fell off, the game carried on as though I had done it to the point of showing the camera movements but then flipped back to Wolverine floating in space and being able to walk through the scenery. In the fight against Gambit, Gambit landed in a position where I couldn't reach him and he just kinda hung there, I restarted the check point and sure enough the next time we fought, it got to the same point and this time Gambit fired at me enabling me to knock him off his perch. The end battle with Deadpool is also frustrating in a similar way, we've all faced off against over powered end of game bad guys, it's what you expect, but, what you don't expect is the guy to be able to kill you stone cold dead with you having very little time to react. This is again reinforced by the terrible slow down effect the game suffers from, if you're not prepared for it then you easily find yourself dying and being set back a way into the battle, but at least not to the start.

None of that should imply that the game isn't a LOT of fun to play, if you don't demand too much thought from a game, but it could have been SO much better. The game falls into that rare middle place, it's got a lot going for it, but also flawed in a lot of ways and that's such a shame. Its great fun levelling up Wolverine and opening up the new moves, its tremendous fun activating Wolverines berserker rage and then spinning through the enemies on screen, blood and guts flying everywhere, with you in the centre of it all like some lethal spinning top.

thumb_x-men_origins_wolverine_20090824_2001244115At the time of writing there is some downloadable content which takes the form of some training exercises which is basically a 'survival' mode for the game. Wolverine faces off against wave after wave of enemies, 50 in total. Not a bad little addition to the game and reasonably priced, but it's something you feel should have been included within the game from the start and doesn't add any value other than something to do when you're bored.

This is a game that should appeal to your casual gamers, the hard core gamers and fans of Wolverine; it's a great blast that has something for everyone and probably one of the best movie tie-in games that I can remember, but then again as Wolverine fans know, he is the best at what he does...
