Mirror's Edge Review - Page 2

Musically the game also shines, the sound track suits the game perfectly and gives off a very ethereal feel as you play through the levels, seemingly picking up the pace to make the game more exciting in key moments. The spot sound effects are well done as well, the whooshing of the wind going by when you pick up speed, or find yourself in a longer than normal drop really help keep your heart pumping, and also there is a strangely satisfying 'thud' as you fall off the zip lines onto a soft landing that I also particularly enjoyed.

The story is progressed by cut scenes between each level as it loads, these are told in an almost cartoon like way but in the same style as the rest of the game so they never seem out of place. The animation of these sequences is particularly well done and the voice acting that accompanies them is also of a high standard. Other parts of the story are told to you as you progress through a level, your companion Merc keep's you up to date on various events that are happening around the city from the Runners base of operations and will warn you when you can expect danger to be near.

thumb_mirrors_edge_20090816_1499267793The game itself is relatively short clocking up perhaps 10 hours of play time, but once you've finished the main game itself there is plenty you've still left to do. There are three bags located in each level to collect which offers you a reason to go back and do the game from scratch again. Though if you don't want the hassle of going back to do the whole game again you can always replay a level once it's been completed. It can be a lot of fun going back to these levels for a second run through though as by the end of the game you'll have a lot better understanding of Faiths abilities and it can feel really satisfying to nail a section you may have struggled with beforehand.

There are also other incentives to going back and replaying a level, they all have a 'Speed Run' version of the level which times you to get through the level as fast as possible, these scores can then be uploaded and compared with your friends online. Unfortunately that's about as multiplayer as the game gets, but, it's understandable, the game really doesn't lend itself to any kind of multiplayer beyond this, perhaps it would have been nice to have the option to race your friends in real time, but, maybe that's something that can be included in a sequel (should one appear).

Another option the game has available is the Time Trial mode, this again pits you against the clock to reach certain check points on a level, there are also some downloadable courses that take you away from the city and place you in a slightly surreal environment should you bore of the original content.

thumb_mirrors_edge_20090816_1712968213Overall, the game isn't perfect, there was more than one occasion where I was frustrated playing it, sometimes the way forward just isn't clear, sometimes the way forward is clear but it just seems like you've got to develop super human reactions to pull off what needs to be done, but mostly it's good fun if you put in the time and learn what needs to be done. As mentioned before, there is a lot to be said about going back to play the levels through again as your grasp of the mechanics of the game has improved and you get a real kick out of playing the game with some degree of accuracy.

There is a demo available on the PlayStation Network Store, if you've any interest in this title then download the demo before checking out the full game, the demos are representative of what you can expect from the full game. It's almost worth suggesting you fork out your hard earned pennies just to experience something a little different for a change.
