In the far fetched future of Relic Entertainment's newest game under the Games Workshop banner lies Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, a game where you control one of the Emporer's mighty Space Marines as you slice, dice and bludgeon your way through hordes of enemies in a glorious third-person perspective.
Relic showed the teaser trailer above behind closed doors which shows the type of game you can come to expect upon release, although no actual gameplay was shown the producers have said that all the footage shown came straight from the in-game engine, which as you can see for yourself is extremely impressive, something which we have come to expect from Relic and its Warhammer 40,000 games.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine will be set on or across various Forge planets, the one shown in the trailer has been overrun by Orks and it'll be your task to stop them and take it back using a variety of equipment. Relic have been keeping the game under heavy wrap from the start of its development and nothing much has been given away by the developers thus far, so there's a lot of speculation floating around on various aspects of the game.
Of course what we do know is that combat is going to be one of the main factors in the game, Relic have said that they intend every button to be capable of some form of violent action with finishing moves on top, so ripping those Ork's a new one with a Chainsword looks like it'll be thrown in for good measure, something which we're sure every Space Marine fan will rejoice at.
The one thing we can be sure of is the plethora of weapons which will be at your Space Marines disposal; Chainswords, Power Hammers, and maybe even Power Fists or Claws (here's hoping) should be included, while on the ranged front we can expect to see the small Bolt Pistols, Bolters, Heavy Bolters and most likely many more weapons including some energy based ones such as Plasma Pistols. Some of the footage shown behind closed doors included some levelling aspects to the game where the player will be able to upgrade various stats for their Space Marine, maybe even weapons as well.
With Relic keeping everyone in the dark on the direction the game is headed we know that Space Marines and Ork's are in but they haven't confirmed or denied the existence of any other species such as Eldar or Tyranids, or for that fact confirmed the chapter the Space Marines will fall under, even though the trailer shows the Ultramarines. Given that the game is in the early development stages then there's certainly a possibility of more races being included to spice things up, something we'll just have to hold out for. Relic have however hinted at some multiplayer aspects to the game, perhaps pitting Space Marines vs Ork's on the battlefield or allowing some cooperative play through the campaign, the only thing they have said is that they want to do justice to the Warhammer 40,000 universe's tradition as a shared experience for all.
So with E3 2009 out of the way it looks like we'll be waiting till next year's E3 for more information on the game, no release date has been confirmed yet but from the looks of things Relic are well on their way to getting the game up to their usual standards and into their fans hands. Are we excited? You're damn right we are.
