Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron allows players to experience battlefronts that span ground, space and capital starships, with robust original storylines and expanded gameplay over the originals.
Star Wars Battlefront has always been popular, letting players take part in some of the famous battles from the Star Wars movies and playing as some of the many heroes and villains throughout the saga. It should come as no surprise then that a further game is due to be released, one such being in November. Each of the Battlefront games have also been released on the PlayStation Portable which makes for some great portable fun, especially with some friends.
Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron is the next game to be released on the PSP and DS, its main feature being battles on multiple levels. One such game comes to mind when thinking of this and one which deserved more credit than it got, Metal Fatigue. Metal Fatigue was an RTS game on the PC released back in 2000, the game allowed you to fight on 3 levels, underground, surface, and sky, Elite Squadron while removing the underground, allows you to battle it out not only on the surface but it's now possible to grab a ship and fly from the surface into space where another battle is taking place. Such battles sound nail bitingly awesome for any Star Wars fan.
With this type of battle system in mind, not only can you fly up into space to battle it out against various heavy cruisers and dogfight it out amongst TIE Fighters or X-Wings, but certain weapons on the ground will allow you to target these ships and fire at them from the ground and into space. One such example of this being the huge Ion cannon from the battle of Hoth, this is the scene in the film protecting the transport ships from the Imperial Star Destroyers as they leave orbit.
Like the previous Battlefront game on PSP, players can play with up to fifteen other people online or up to five people over local wireless though this has not been confirmed for the Nintendo DS version.
As with the originals, playing through Elite Squadron will have its own rewards such as unlockable characters and various customisations for characters and vehicles which allow you to have your own insignia on a vehicle among other things. While the previous games had a basic story which followed the timeline of the movies, the game was more based around the battles that took place, we're told that Elite Squadron will come with an original story which will change the way we see the game as a whole, something which was clearly missing from the previous titles. The single player story will be set over the course of the entire film saga and further on as you control an Imperial trooper cloned from a Jedi master who turned to the Rebellion called X2.
Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron looks to be improving on what already were great games with few minor flaws, with the addition of multiple levels of combat it should provide some interesting battles, however with only support for 16 players online, it could become a little sparse in multiplayer.
You can look forward to seeing Elite Squadron on the PSP and DS sometime towards the end of 2009.
