Electronic Arts has just revealed the latest in their long running Battlefield franchise, Battlefield Play4Free, a cross-combination of Battlefield 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 that, as the name suggests, is free to play.
Play4Free will work in the same fashion as Battlefield: Heroes does, using micro-transactions to pay for it.
Taking the most popular maps and the most powerful classes and weapons from both Battlefield 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, EA say the new game is "a deep PC shooter featuring signature Battlefield vehicular warfare, sandbox gameplay and intense 32-player online battles."
"We broke new ground in 2009 with the launch of Battlefield Heroes; a game that has 6M registered players worldwide. Now we are complementing that arcade shooter with a core, realistic Battlefield shooter experience that fans have been clamouring for," said senior producer, James Salt.
"Battlefield Play4Free is for serious shooter fans who are looking for a premium — but free — experience that rivals top console titles."
The official website is up, allowing users to sign up for the closed beta test that starts at the end of the month, all through here.
Battlefield Play4Free is due to launch next year.
