Gearbox has given its permission to allow a fan made "re-vision of Duke Nukem 3D" to be created, updating its engine, graphics and gameplay. The re-vision will include both single-player and multiplayer when it releases, oh, it'll also be free!
The news came from the official Gearbox forums, where the re-vision of Duke Nukem 3D is being called Duke Nuke: Next-Gen, a placeholder for its eventual release.
The idea first started with a forum user known as "fresch" creating the Hollywood Holocaust rooftop scene in a new 3D engine and posting screenshots of it on the Gearbox forums. The creator then contacted 3D Realms' George Brussard, Scott Miller and PJ Putnam, the guys now at Gearbox, to request permission on getting the go-ahead to re-create the whole Duke Nukem 3D game.
Gearbox have obliged the request, granting a personal non-commerical license to the developer, with the request that it remain free in both single-player and multiplayer.
No date on the project yet, but, you can see the awesome looking Hollywood Holocaust rooftop in the video below.
