Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Turbine, Inc., developers behind Lord of the Rings Online, have announced that the game would be going free-to-play up until level 50 on September 10.
The new free-to-play service which launches on September 10 includes the main game where players can increase in level to a maximum of 50. The previously released expansions such as Mines of Moria will have to be purchased from the in-game store, a place where quest packs, items and other services can also be purchased for a moderate fee.
For current subscribers, or those wanting the full service, then the VIP program gives you unlimited access to all the content included in Lord of the Rings Online, all for one price.
Here's the free-to-play info:
- Free means Free - Players will download LOTRO and play free up to level 50.
- The Store - The LOTRO Store has thousands of convenience items as well as expansion packs, premium content, additional character slots, potions, character customization and more. It is integrated into the game and lets the player enhance and customize their experience using points which can be purchased in the store or earned through gameplay.
- VIP - Players who elect to become a LOTRO VIP will have unlimited access to all premium content, receive priority server access, 5 character slots, a shared bank slot, and a monthly allotment of points to spend in the new LOTRO Store.

Lord of the Rings Online goes free-to-play on September 10, if you're interested in giving it a whirl then you can download it from the official site, or even through Steam.
